Piece of Work Wednesday Furniture Link Party NUmber 29!

This is the last Tuesday that I will be putting this up so early, as it is the last Tuesday I am subbing a Tuesdday evening class at the gym.  My coworker is back from surgery next week!  Anyhow, I have a china cabinet to share this week- it's been a while since I have done a piece this big, and it has a bittersweet story.  Ellen brought me this china cabinet that her grandmother passed on to her.

It's beautiful, but it wasn't Ellen's style; she preferred softer and more shabby chic.  Ellen brought over her china that would be going in the cabinet and we decided to give it a warm white distressed look with a soft green on the inside.  I showed her my own cabinets, and we chose Sherwin Williams Alabaster with Minwax Golden Oak stain for the exterior, and Benjamin Moore's Lily Pad for the inside.  It was a lot of work, but I finally finished it!  I emailed Ellen to let her know, and I planned on taking a nice picture of it outside just before we loaded it into her truck. (And because my husband said to me after we brought it into the house from sanding, "This cabinet will be staying right there until they pick it up".  Um, yes, it was a bit challenging for us to get it down the stairs of our home.)  Anyhow, it took Ellen a couple days to get back to me which was unusual.   She told me her grandmother had been ill and passed away.  I told her not to worry, and to take her time and take care of her family.  This piece now is going to have so much more meaning to Ellen, so I am honored to have painted it for her, and glad that she will have so many nice memories when she looks at it.  Anyhow, these pictures are from my basement workspace, because as the man said, it's not moving!

I can't wait for Ellen to see it! So what have you been working on?

BEAUTIFUL china cabinet, Cassie!

Oh, Cassie, that's beautiful! I'm sure that she'll love it and that she'll have happy thoughts of her g-ma when she looks at it.

I've got two pieces that don't go together. I'm about to paint them and turn them into a kind of hutch. I was planning to use a cream color for most of it, but I'd started trying to think of a color to use on the back paneling. I'm thinking the green you used here might be the way to go.

It looks beautiful, Cassie! The detail on the glass doors is very pretty. I'm sure Ellen will cherish it even more. I think it fits the Shabby Chic look very well!

I finally painted something, haha!

Have a good Tuesday!

I love this. SO I am wondering...is your work space in a unfinished basement. Did you spray down there or when you paint do you use a brush? Great work BTW i love the finished product and I love a shabby hutch!

I have a garage and an unfinished basement and I have been thinking of when its too cold for the garage...thanks

Hey Cassie-

Have you done any dressers with a laminate top? If so, did the normal sanding-priming-painting work? I have some cheap dressers & I'm planning on kicking their butt!

I know exactly what you are talking about. I just finished a hutch myself (I've linked it here) .... what a monster to deal with.

What a beautiful piece and a wonderful treasure for Ellen! Yes, definitely bittersweet!

Cassie, I need to talk to you about this in more depth via email. I love this cabinet and have one that is similar. It was my parent's first piece of "real" furniture so I don't want to get rid of it, but I really don't like the dark finish. Feeling really guilty for wanting to paint it. Can you talk me down from the bridge? Better yet, could you come to NC and paint if for me :) ?

Wow! At first I was thinking it was too, too nice to paint, but I do understand that you want to make a piece work in your life or you won't enjoy it as much. Beside, you can always strip it:)
It turned out beautifully! I love the idea of a different color on the inside. You really thought of all the details.
