An Armoire for Me!

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

A few weeks ago I shared how I want my master bedroom to look over at lemondropDreams.  One of the things that I have been looking for is an armoire to hide our TV and cable box.  Well, Saturday morning I woke and had my breakfast, and prepared to get to work on Emmy's room.  As I drank my coffee, I checked the local craigslist and came across an armoire for $25.  It was not exactly what I was looking for. I was hoping for a beautiful French style double door armoire, but everything I had seen like that around here was WAAAAAY out of my price range.
Here is what I was hoping for....

Antique Armoire
Via
And here is what I found....
As you can see it is totally different, but it had that rustic antique vibe, and it was going to fit our TV!  So for $25 I was determined to make it work.

I brought it home and painted it with ASCP Paris Gray.  (I have told you guys before this is not my favorite paint, but I do love that color!).  Then I distressed it by hand, and white washed it, using a mixture of half water, half Sherwin Williams Alabaster, and brushed it on, wiping off excess with a rag.  After that was done, I waxed and buffed it.

Now, the inside had been used for a TV before, but the original shelf was very low, and besides that it just had some hooks in it.  I removed the hooks, and purchased two pieces of bull nosed MDF, and cut them to size.  I purchased steel shelf brackets as well and drilled the holes to place the brackets which would support the shelves.  I placed one shelf up higher for our cable box and DVD player, and another shelf at the height we wanted the TV.  I am contemplating cutting a third shelf for the bottom, or purchasing a deep basket to fill the space, but for now at least it is working!

Here is a look at the revamped inside.  See you can see where the previous owner had a hole cut for their TV much lower than ours.  That is why I am contemplating a big basket or shelf to hide it.  But I love the little drawer inside!
My original, first ever owl always stays in my room...

Some special photos on the bottom shelf....
And a stack of books and magazines....

And here is a look at the outside.  Please bear in mind the rest of our room is nowhere near being complete, so ignore the wood trim, dingy walls, and anything else, really!

As you can see, I added antique glass knobs I had on hand... a small one for the interior drawer, and a large one for the door.  I am really happy with how it turned out and happier that I don't always have to see my TV unless I am watching it!  Of course, if one of those double door French ones comes along, this could very well end up for sale. ;)
Oh, and as a bonus, Chris even told me he likes it- he usually doesn't say anything unless he actually likes it or strongly dislikes it!

LOVE THIS! I'm calling dibs if you put it for sale...nevermind that I have no place for it, but I'll make room!!!!

Tracy's Trinkets and Treasures March 7, 2012 7:05 AM

I really like the painting you did and the size and shape of the piece. I bet you could use some beadboard wallpaper and cover the back and make the hole disappear! Or even use beadboard.

A place 2 call home March 7, 2012 7:16 AM

It's really pretty, and even though it's not wood like your inspiration it totally has the same feeling! Great job as usual and it's nice see you paint something you are keeping : )

It is amazing what a little white paint can do! You took a very art deco looking piece of furniture and transformed it. Nice.

You did a beautiful job! That looks wonderful! And I definitely agree about adding a basket or something to cover up the hole in the back.

Starr @ The Kiefer Cottage March 7, 2012 9:40 AM

Very nice. What a great deal!!

P.S. You could always use the hole as a puppet theater. Since most people love puppets, right?

michelle March 7, 2012 9:46 AM

You really turned that into something beautiful Cassie, I love it. I also love the detail of the key hole. You really made it look like how it was supposed to be. :) Great find.

Cassie, this piece reminds me so much of the wardrobes my family in Ireland uses in older homes without closets. You really brought the character out - the color and dimension is great.....and that picture of you with babe in arms is SO lovely!!

Korrie@RedHenHome March 7, 2012 1:35 PM

Well, if a double door French model DOES come along, won't it be great to be able to sell this one for a huge profit in order to buy it? And for now, it looks great! It's a really big deal when a husband notices ;-)

OK- It's official. I'm gonna keep track of the paint colors you use and keep them in mind for my projects. You have the best taste!!

Heather @ The Junktion March 7, 2012 2:24 PM

I think it turned out adorable. I'm so happy you found it at such an affordable price. I just repaired a piece similar to this for a customer (the back had a large hole). Just removed the back and replace it with some thin plywood painted gray (imagine this) on the inside for a pop of color. Is anything like that an option or is this piece's back jointed in there since it's such an old piece? Just a thought. Love it though, really love it!

Ali Richardson March 7, 2012 2:36 PM

SoooOOOooo awesome!! I love it :)I super wish we had a tv in our room!

What a find you lucky girl! You made it beautiful as usual...I'm looking forward to trying the chalk paint.

Allison@FabRehab March 7, 2012 3:32 PM

WOW! $25?? You made it shine!

Kelly March 7, 2012 4:03 PM

$25 is crazy cheap for that! I can't believe you got it all painted and finished already. I would have stored it in the garage for several months first. :)

Katie March 7, 2012 4:07 PM

Love it Cassie! Those knobs make it so cute! I love that little drawer on the bottom as well!

Karah @ thespacebetweenblog March 7, 2012 4:42 PM

I absolutely LOVE it! My first thought was vintagy antique too, totally workable. Love the final product...wood trim, dingy walls and all. ;)

Sherry March 7, 2012 4:57 PM

Cassie, it's beautiful! You really made it a special piece. I think that grey is beautiful also. I am thinking about painting the interior of my house a pale grey...or plain white...can't decide. Kinda nervous...:\

My craigs list is not this good! It looks great! Love the color, what great storage!

Upscale Downhome March 7, 2012 5:41 PM

That was quite a score! From the style of the armoire, it looks to be almost Eastlake in design so it is probably from the late 1800s to early 1900s...is that what you think? It's a really pretty piece and I'm glad it's found a happy home!

Bea March 7, 2012 6:22 PM

It is gorgeous! My suggestion to cover the hole is to tack a piece of an antique "cutter" quilt there. Would be a nice backdrop for the photos. What an amazing find!

This turned out so cute! I love the white washed look over the grey. I use SW Alabaster all the time, I never thought to use it "white wash" genius! I vote for the large basket underneath, that would be really cute. $25, that was a good find! At first I thought you were writing to say you got that French Armoire for $25!

Suzanne@Meridian Road March 8, 2012 9:52 AM

You completely transformed it! I love it! The color and finish are just perfect.
I'd just cut a piece of bead board to cover the hole if you don't find a basket you like.

Heaven's Walk March 8, 2012 10:36 PM

Great job, Cassie! Armoires are perfect for hiding away those ugly TVs! I did the same thing with a vintage wardrobe cabinet for our living room and bedroom. We love closing the doors and making the TV go away. lol!
