Friday Guest: Shelley from Crazy Wonderful

Happy Friday!  And thank you all for the birthday wishes for me and my little man.  We had a great day filled with legos, swords, a doggy pillow pet, and castles!  And Sawyer got some cool presents, too. ;)  And he got to start his day with a birthday waffle.

The kids also had a fabulous week at art camp.  It was a M-Th camp so it's over, but they made some fabulous projects!  On the last day, they even had their faces painted.... Sawyer went with Iron Man, and Emmy is a butterfly...

Today, I have an awesome guest for you!  I am so excited to have Shelley from Crazy Wonderful here today.  She is so sweet and has beautiful style!  I first fell in love with her and her beautiful blog when I laid eyes on her daughter Izzy's room.  Behold!

Does it get any sweeter?  Nope.  Although.... maybe it will.  Because Shelley is going to have another baby, and I for one can not wait to see that nursery!  And the baby, too, of course.  Izzy is pretty stinkin' cute. :)  Anyhow, I will let Shelley take over from here.  Happy Friday!

Hey, hey Primitive and Proper folks!  This is Shelley from Crazy Wonderful, and I'm thrilled to be posting here today about a little project I recently completed.

Here's what I started with.  Certainly not a bad rug, but it was starting to feel a little busy to me.

So I flipped her over thinking that would work for a bit.  Not so much.  Too plain, and you could see past beer stains.  Tilt your screen, it's there ;)

But all that plain-ness gave me an idea.  Here's my zero cost rug face lift.

What you'll need:
  • rug
  • painters tape
  • paint
  • paint brush
How to do it:

STEP ONE:  Mark off your stripes with the painters tape.  The rows in this rug made it incredibly easy to keep everything even.  Make sure you really press the sides of the tape down well so that no paint seeps underneath.

STEP TWO:  This one is optional - Get yourself a cutie-pa-tootie to supervise that all of the tape strips are properly placed.  She gave me the all clear to proceed.

STEP THREE:  Start painting!  The amount of paint you'll need really depends on the thickness and material of your rug.  If you don't have leftover paint I suggest getting a small sample pot of paint from your local home improvement store.  It's usually around $3.  Start off light along the taped edges and build up from there.  Always easier to add more paint than to try and subtract after a mess!  Not that I've ever had that happen ;)

You'll notice two shade of gray paint in the second photo.  I started off with the darker gray color and ended up changing my mind after I pulled some of the tape off.  I re-taped that area and went back over it with the lighter gray.  It was an easy fix and didn't affect the final color at all.

STEP FOUR:  Peel off the painters tape before things get a chance to dry.  This will keep the tape from riping and getting stuck to the dried paint.

And here we are, all done!

I really do love how it turned out.  It ties in so much better with the decor throughout the house.  I'm kicking myself for not doing this sooner.

And, if for any reason I want to go back to the old rug I can just flip it over.  Easy schmesy!

Thank you again Cassie for having me over today!

Did you put any kind of 'sealer' on it or anything? Or do you just leave it as is?

(Looks great!)

I'm so glad y'all had a great birthday! Hope you have fun playing with your new Legos. ;)

That rug is awesome--I have one with a new stain---haha....long story.......and painting it sounds like a great plan!! Especially if mine turns out as great as hers!! Carol-Anne did have a great question--any sealer necessary?

What a great idea! Sadly I have no existing carpets with a plain underside BUT I will be keeping that in mind when I purchase area rugs in the future.

Art camp? Can adults attend? :) Looks like they a blast!

I love this! And now you have two rugs. Genius. I need to do this with all my rugs when I sick of them.
