So, you remember when I painted the stripes in my dining room, and it looked like this:
And over time I made some more changes as this picture was taken shortly after we moved in. Most recently, back in April, I took a leap and painted some fun coral chars which left the room looking like this....

I loved it.... I really did. But here is the thing.... my husband hates (well, I should say hated) those Eames chairs, which I loved (and still do!). He thought they were uncomfortable and really was simply not a fan. My friend Emily said it best when he said they "hugged her butt". Maybe they are just made for women. Anyhow, last week, they went to a new home with a cool young hipster and her husband. So at least I feel like they will be loved and appreciated. I may have cried a little after they left.
I wouldn't leave my dining room empty-handed though! A friend recently offered to give me 6 lovely dining chairs because she thought I could do something with them.... why, yes, turns out I could use them in my own home! So, there has been some rearranging going on, and with the new chairs in there, I was not digging the coral anymore. Or maybe it's the pending Fall season that has me wanting the coral out.... either way, right now the coral chairs sit in my garage awaiting their fate.
So, here is the room as it looks right now. And yes, that is the dog bed in the corner and the ugly light fixture (that will not be replaced until we redo the kitchen and maybe blow down some walls!)... keepin it real.
You can see I pulled the bench from the porch inside. And I replaced that bench with another from the guest room! Shuffle shuffle!
These chairs came to me already like this.... I am going to keep them as is for now. Maybe I will change the seats.
And I have left some color in the room in the form of VBS artwork from Sawyer, and a bowl he made filled with rocks the kids painted a couple weeks ago.
And you may have noticed the new art. Formerly, I had some plywood peacock art I created, but I never really loved it. I wasn't sure what I wanted to hang on the walls. I found this vintage painting for $5 at an estate sale...
And purchased this one for $7 at another estate sale. They aren't the same size or shape, but I think they pair nicely.
And there you have it.... for now. I feel like it is at least more ready for Fall! But, I have to admit, I really miss those Eames chairs.
PS. I wanted to add that because I removed the sailboat painting from the guest room I needed to fill that space. I used a vintage unframed painting I had on hand. Around it I hung several vintage watercolors I found at a yard sale and I hung those the same way I hung Emmy's vintage book pages. here is the wall now!
It's rather random, I know. But I like it like that.

you mean I'm not the only one who digs random? Must be an English major thing--like flipping from Twain to Dickens to Sylvia Plath to Toni Morrison. You can't get much more random than that.
I like the new chairs and the changes in the dining room. Looks great and the new art is lovely in both room. Super changes. Hugs, Marty
i like the new changes. Funny- i was going to do a pop of coral in my office , painted a few things and then realized coral wasn't for me. I like that sign you have over your side table in your dining room. did you make that?
Such a beautiful space! I loved those chairs but the replacements are pretty great too!
I actually love your new chairs even more...I'm not a hipster, I guess. They look fab (hipster language)! Can't wait to see what you do with seats...why not try what I did in my kitchen...a different material (in same colors) on each chair?
While I did love your old chairs, poor Chris deserves some contort too :) I love the mix of the bench with chairs!!!
swooning over that bench!!! the room looked great before but I think I love it even more now. And the book pages are adorbs :)
I like the change in seats :)
I do love those original chairs, but agree that they new chairs look awesome.
Really like the bench in there! Those ship paintings are wonderful! Starting to think about fall here too.
I LOVE your new chairs! And you know, I thought I bet she'll re-cover those seats!
aww, I am sad about your chairs for you, they were cute! :(
The new ones are a nice shape too, and would look great with new upholstery.
We actually don't really have anywhere for my retro kitchen chairs in this house, but there is no way in hell I am ever getting rid of them...they are currently dotted all about the house...i just know I would forever regret it if I did. Hmm that probably isn't helping you get over your chairs, is it!?
Sorry!
xx Karen
The new chairs is perfect for the dining room since the room has that vintage look to it. I would be sad to leave the Eames chairs too but glad you found them a good home.
Your title made me giggle :D
It's always fun to switch things up. And, yes, keeping your hubby happy is rather important! I like your new look. Great art finds as well!
What we do for love and to keep a hubby happy ... I might have had to draw the line at getting rid of the Eames chairs. Love them. But, your new chairs do fit beautifully in the room and I love the fact they provide an opportunity to add a patterned fabric on the chair seats. If for no other reason I like wood chairs for the quick change seat options they offer. And maybe a long cushion with complimentary fabric on the bench would be cool too. Glad to see someone else has a dog bed lounging thing in the dining room ... thought I was the only one.
The new chairs look great! now that the chairs are toned down (for now!!) ;) you can play with colorful accessories! p.s. love the green of the piece right out your dining room door!!!
Aww the things we do for our husbands, right? Rick is really good about letting me do what I want (as your husband probably is too), but there are some things that he says absolutely NOT about. I love your striped walls!
Those men! Love the changes in there though, and I've always wanted a bench for seating in our dining room. Maybe someday!
ooooo....I love the new chairs. I'm not a big modern girl but love the more rustic casual, so those are right up my alley. They pair so great with the table. And, I absolutely love that you added the bench for the porch. It really completes the look and feel. (oh, and if you look closely in too many of my pictures...you'll see dog beds too).
I think the white chairs go better with the color you have in there. Too bad about those cool chairs though :( By the way, I had a really gross picture pop into my mind when I read your post title, ewww.
OK Seriously, why doesn't that happen to me? Oh um... so I have these extra 6 beatiful chairs hanging out... do you want them? UM YES. I like the new chairs better but mostly because I'm uber traditional.
I, too, love a frequent shift!! And thank you so much for pulling your bench inside for this post!! I was laying in bed last night dreaming of a bench EXACTLY like that ... I want to make my 16 foot long piece of 'driftwood' into one. Exactly like that, seriously. :)
What is it with husbands and wanting comfortable seating?! :) Your new chairs are fabulous, can't wait to see some new fabric for fall (I know that's coming)!
I think your new panties look better on you. Maybe it's the way they hug your butt.
Bliss
I am LOVIN' the comment just above me by Bliss. lol Hysterical.
I'm worried about your friends personal hygiene. :P
Love the look of the dining room. I am a little sad to see those chairs go. I hope the hipster loves them and treats them well. Darn husbands ruining all of our fun. :P
Oh...I love the new (free) chairs...they really go well with the rest of the room...lucky you that your friend passed them on to you. Lovin' the look of the bench in there too.
Blessings,
Linda
It's looking great! I love the new chairs & the art. But we need to get you some fun curtain panels girl! Of course, those are a little more expensive to change :)
Looking good!! I love the bench at the table and I'm picturing a bold graphic fabric on the seats of those chairs. Coveting your vintage paintings, too. A home run, IMO!
xo Heidi
I would have cried too - I lOVED those chairs too! The new ones are really pretty though and I like the bench in there. The things we do for our men! ;)
It's all looking so great! I loved the coral chairs too, but these are nice. I think a new fabric would be fun!
Change is good, Cassie, your dining room looks great! I like the paintings too - wow what a steal.
I am feeling the pain of you getting rid of those Eames chairs. They were amazing! Love the new look; it's very traditional and soothing. All your art work is fun, too. I especially love the ship paintings!
I like random. :) I think they look pretty.
I'm sorry you had to give up your chairs. But everyone has to be happy, right? I do like your new ones.
LoVe it ALL!!!!! everything looks fabulous yo!!! Seriously. Nailed it!
Hee, hee! I like random too...95% of my life consists of random thoughts. Sometimes they actually come out of my mouth...well, most of the time. LOL. Anyhow...loooove the redo and if you EVER decide to sell that ANTIQUES sign I'll take it...fast. Thanks for coming by! Hugs, -Kennesha
The things we do for the men in our lives, right? I'm sorry you had to let go of those chairs...at least they went to a great home like you said. I do like your new ones! Infact, I am painting the matching armchair. The benches work well in your dining room Cassie. I like those a lot.
I too love the butt-hugging chairs, but your replacements are fab along with the bench! I loved the coral with the blue, but conveniently you can sell things you tire of when you need a change….how awesome is that??
I think the chairs look great! Plus, I'm completely jealous of your ship paintings!!!
I love combining dining chairs with a bench! I loved your old dining room, also, but if it's not comfy, you and your guests won't sit around the table for that second bottle of wine!
Love the bench it looks so awesome in your space. Great dining room you have such a cool style.
Love your new chairs, though I understand your feelings of loss! As my husband likes to say, nothing but the kids, the dog and me is permanent in our house. I'm a random gal too, bet you always "eyeball" things rather than measure!
I'm sad to see the Eames go but those are some pretty fantastic replacements! If you do recover the chairs can't wait to see what you choose. I always love your fabric choices.
I love the changes! I have benches in my dining room too. I do love those modern chairs too, but benches are more my style. I can't keep anything the same for more than two years.
Love the unframed artwork in the guest bed. And there is that bed I was thinking about!
Score on the new chairs! They are beautiful as-is. I'm really digging those nightstands! I know that's not the focus of this post, but those are SO cool!
The things we do for love! I would have cried when those Eames chairs left too - luckily your new ones are just as fab! Love the changes!
I love the new look and change is always my thing to....you never know what you might find at a store or a yard sale! Unfortunately we'd all be hoarders if we fit everything we love into our houses.
have I mentioned before that your "squirrel with a nut" thing about comments always makes me sing C & C music factory?? haha. Anyhoo...I never knew Chris hated the Eames chairs? Doesn't that break some kind of golden rule or something lol! I love the new chairs too. I loved the coral but this is more you. Loved the peacocks too...I'll miss those guys. *sniff*
Don't you just hate when the guys get in the way of your styling and doing your thing? We have constant debates like that in our house about practical pieces of furniture. Well you made it look great though. I really love the sailboat artwork. I have been itching to do a gallery wall lately filled with estate and thrifted sailboat paintings just like yours. I am slowly growing a collection.
I think the new chairs look great! Oh, the things we do to make our husbands happy! I painted my whole living room, then had to repaint because my husband *finally* decided to tell me he didn't really like green ;-)
Hahahaha! This title made me laugh :)
I love the new chairs and I'm obsessed with those stripes! What a fun space!
I cry with you...
on the rare occasion that my husband has an opinion about something house related, i kinda feel like i have to listen to it. so i get that you parted with the eames chairs, but i sighed out loud for you. i really love having a bench at our dining table-yours looks great in there.
Sorry about your chairs, but I think your switch up looks awesome! Really comfortable and inviting and I agree, the new chairs are pretty as-is but would be fantastic with a punchy graphic print!
Those new chairs have a wonderful sophisticated feel! I like the change!
